NATIONAL TEAM QUALIFICATIONS EXPLAINED (from USAC)

UCI 4X (Saturday)
- auto qualifier for Pro Men and Pro Women (no junior World Championship 4X event)
UCI DH (Monday)
- auto qualifier for Pro Men, Pro Women, Junior X Men and Junior X Women
USAC Nats 4X
- NOT an auto qualifier (but winners will receive STRONG consideration from USAC for the team)

IMPORTANT CLARIFICATION: to be named to USAC's Worlds Team you must be the winner of the event. For example, should an international rider take first place (or someone who's already been named to the team) take first, the slot on the World's Team WILL NOT be awarded to the next placed domestic rider. Win and in, baby.

TOYOTA FJ OFF-ROAD RIDE & DRIVE

You really need to experience this to believe it - the FJ folks (along with Dave, Angel Fire's head groomer and equipment operator) have created an incredible off-road trials course that you guys all get to try out. The FJ drivers ride shotgun in the passenger seat and walk you through the whole experience. The course itself is scary. Real scary. The experience and the capabilities of the vehicle are nothing short of amazing. they're going to be offering test drives Friday-Sunday from 9-4 each day. DO NOT MISS THIS - IT'S THE COOLEST THING YOU'LL DO ALL YEAR!

DALE’S PALE ALE SERRANO SUPER-D presented by Titec
Saturday, May 24th

This is a Super-D course that's heavy on the D. Most of the Super-D uses the old Beta course that we've run in the past, but with a few of the super-techy sections removed. Your lift ($15/day, available at registration) ticket is also good for the rest of the day and the whole mountain is open, so feel free to get your runs in. You’re also eligible to purchase lift tickets at the discounted rate for the duration of the event.

THE FOX RACING SHOX UCI CAYENNE 4X
Saturday, May 24th

A lot of time has passed since this course was built and it's gotten steadily better from year to year as the Cycle Cyndicate then Bigfoot Productions crews have tweaked and improved it. This year brings additional improvements with Steve Wentz from Momentum Trail Concepts coning out to move a little dirt well in advance of the event. For a full explanation of Wentz's changes head to the Chile forum. This is a UCI C2-level event (points outlined on this page). The winners of the Pro Men and Pro Women categories get automatic slots on USA Cycling’s World Championship Team. Remember, registration for Pros closes Friday afternoon, so either get there on time or pre-register on www.SportsBaseOnline.com. This event is open to all categories and is a part of the Mountain States Cup Championship Series. Season passholders for Gravity or Gated are automatically entered.

THE SANTA CRUZ 4X NAT’L CHAMPIONSHIP
Sunday, May 25th

Open to domestic pros only. This event is NOT INCLUDED in the MSC Gravity or Gated-Only season pass, nor is it a part of the MSC. That means that there are no series points for this event. We’ll be using the qualifying times from Friday to set up brackets here. Like the UCI World’s Team Qualifier above, the winners of the Pro Mens and Pro Womens race not only earn a stars ‘n stripes jersey, but strong consideration for a slot on USAC’s World Championship Team. Remember, registration for Pros closes Friday afternoon, so either get there on time or pre-register on www.SportsBaseOnline.com.

SHIMANO XTR JALAPENO XC:
Sunday, May 25th

Dave Weins put it best when he said “I love that XC course at Angel Fire – you spend all that time climbing your way up, then you turn around and climb the whole way back down.” What Dave was referring to was the rugged nature of Angel Fire’s terrain. It’s a true mountain biker’s course that’ll call on every skill you have as a rider. The guys and girls with the best all around game are going to find themselves on the podium here. The XC will take place Sunday May 25th. Check out the schedule above for the main waves and check in on-site for each races individual start waves. There’s a mandatory riders meeting in the start finish area before the start of each wave. The course consists of 60% technical single-track and 30% fire roads.  The long loop is approximately. 9 miles and climbs to 10,500 ft each lap with about 2000’ feet of elevation gain. The short loop (the old World Cup loop) is 5.5 miles and climbs to 9600 ft each lap with 1200’ of elevation gain. You can check out a course profile at Trailcentral.com. (Be advised that the race info posted there is from the 2006 event though, OK?)http://www.trailcentral.com/gps/gps_routes.php?key=&detail=114&num_routes=3

THE SHIMANO SAINT HABANERO DH presented by Santa Cruz
Monday, May 26th

We’ll be using the World Cup course with the Alpha Woods start and a few new twists thrown in. Cap’n Carhartt’s on-site already plucking deadfall off the trail. Winners in JR X, Pro Men and Pro Women get an automatic spot on USAC’s World Championship squad. Pros will take their seeding run on Sunday with all categories running on Monday. This is a UCI C2-level DH for Pro Men and Women. Please see point scale. Registration deadlines are contained within the master schedule on this page.

CLUNKER CRIT (presented by the freaks at Dale's)

More info coming. Multiple classes will be offered (new townie, junker, frankenbike, etc) depending upon who shows up on what. The crit will be held in the tech/expo area and will involve eating, drinking and riding miscelanneous pieces of crap around the parking lot amid the cheers and jeers of your fellow riders.

SHIMANO KIDS RACE

A fun, safe event for kids 9 and under. Every kid gets a prize and an award. The SKR will take place at 1:45 at the Cross-Country start. Everything you need to get your child registered will be waiting for you there.

MEDIA:

Members of the media need to check in at registration for press credentials. Your credential grants you access to the media room and the chairlift. Please present a business card to our registration staff to get your credential. Wireless broadband access and fax service will be available in the event's media room.

LIFT TICKETS:

$15/day and are required for each day of competition and practice. Yes, we know that some resorts don't charge for race day tickets, but there was no way around this issue this year. To place it in perspective though, all categories are getting twice as much scheduled practice time than at any other NMBS venue, PLUS the whole mountain is open for you to ride every day.

PRACTICE PROTOCOL:

Riders with scheduled practice times will be given preferred access at the bottom of the chair. All other riders will be allowed on the chair, but will be asked to defer to whomever has access to either the Super-D or DH race course at that time. On Monday lift access will be restricted to riders with scheduled practice and competition times.

WAIVERS FOR JUNIORS

If you're under 18 you'll need to bring waivers signed by your parents. You can download 'em HERE.

Wi-Fi HOTSPOTS

Free wireless broadband access will be available in the registration area. If you can sweet-talk the front desk folks you can also get on the grid in the hotel lobby.

CAMPING:

Plenty of camping is available on-site in the parking lots surrounding the venue. There's a nominal fee from the resort folks. Porta-johns are set up in a few of them and if you really need privacy you can head to the hotel. Just got word, showers are available at Angel Fire Resort RV Park. Head southeast from Angel Fire on HWY 434 and look for the horse stables on the left hand side of the road. Head here for a huge list of all the RV parks and campgrounds. Need a map of the venue? Click HERE

Blue Lot Camping Rates:
Tents - $10/night

RV's (no hookups) - $15/night

The resort will also be offering tent camping at its RV park just south of town (ironically, no RV's will be allowed here - something in the ownership covenants.) There are showers and a laundry room here - it'll be $15/night - both are available for competitor use. The RV Park is located about 3 miles South on HWY 434 on the left hand side.  Look for the horse stables.  Space available on a first come, first served.  All camping permits will be sold at registration starting Thursday.

WEATHER:

Two words: "HERO DIRT". There's a fair bit of snow on the mountain with 3 weeks to go until the event. Forecasts call for warm weather between now and then, so the melted snow will do a good job of keeping the course in great shape and the dust down. Expect highs in the 70's and overnight lows in the 30's.

CHILE PEPPER BIKE SHOP OPENS ANGEL FIRE LOCATION

Exciting news from Chile Pepper Bike Shop in Moab, Utah!!!  Chile Pepper is opening a second location at Angel Fire Resort in Angel Fire, New Mexico.  The new shop will be open May 21st, just in time for the Chile Challenge Race Series May 23-26, 2008.  The shop’s operating period will be mid-May through mid-September each year. We’ll be a full-service shop offering bike rentals, expert repair service and biking apparel.

Needless to say, we’re SUPER STOKED to be opening a shop at Angel Fire Resort.  With the resort’s plans to make Angel Fire a premier gravity fed mountain bike destination, we’re looking forward to offering our continued quality of bikes and service to visitors to Angel Fire. Shop owner Ryon Reed’s background aligns perfectly with the style of riding offered at Angel Fire is right up his alley. Ryon hopes to be involved in new trail building at the resort and plans on spending his days off shoveling dirt on the hill, running his chainsaw and taking DH runs.

If you’re looking for a new place to ride, come to Angel Fire and stop in the shop and say hello. We’ll be open from 8am to 6pm Friday through Monday in May and June, and Thursday through Monday the remainder of the summer. We’re located near the Chile Express chair lift and ticket offices at the base of the mountain.  For more info you can contact us at 505-377-4291 (Angel Fire) or 435-259-4688 (Moab).
