FAT TIRE 40It's on - the Fat Tire 40 returns with the same epic 40 + mile course on legendary Crested Butte singletrack. Other races claim it, but the Fat Tire 40 really does deliver the goods! The Fat Tire 40 is a USA Cycling sanctioned event for Pros, CAT 1’s (except CAT 1 15-18), and the Wild-CAT Class. ANYONE can race it! Feed stations will be located after the Farris/Strand loop-end of Canal TRail where it hits Brush Creek Road, and the end of Deer Creek, where it hits Gothic Road. Approximately mile 19 and 30. Food, water, sports drink (Acli-mate Endurance) and perhaps some chocolate will be available.
The course is fully marked, including the Farris/Strand corkscrew, and including the pre-ride version of the course. There will be volunteers at all intersections come race day, so travel will be even easier then. In terms of pre-riding the course, there is an issue with accessing Farris Creek the same way we will access it on race day. The Veltri family has been kind enough to open the gate on Strand Hill Road to access Farris Creek for the first part of the Farris/Strand Corkscrew - but on race day only. In the meantime for pre-riding the course, you can access Farris Creek by going just past (North) the Strand Hill Road, and riding up the Canal Trail, and then Strand Bonus. This is all signed and marked for convenience in any-pre riding of the course. The order of trails, Farris, Strand, then Deer Creek is numbered and signs will help direct riders to the proper trails. In the race, Strand Bonus will be used to access Strand Hill after Farris Creek, so in pre-riding, you will ride Strand Bonus twice, but only once on race day. Make sure to pick up a Lat 40 map at the Alpineer in Crested Butte, and check out crankcollective.com for more course info and maps.
